Mini Implants May Be Right For You

July 12, 2019

Filed under: Dental Implants — PM Blogger @ 8:47 am

Though they are not as well known as traditional dental implants, mini implants are also being used successfully in the Marble Falls area to improve smiles. Implants are popular because they provide a natural, lasting smile, allowing you to live and eat more freely. At Ritchie Dental Groupwe can help you decide if dental implants are the best option for you.

What Are Mini Implants?

Like their larger diameter counterparts, mini implants can support a restoration for one or more missing teeth or replace a bridge or fixed denture. Denture wearers benefit greatly from these slip-free dental implants that are anchored securely in the jaw bone. Unlike traditional implants, mini implants are one solid piece that screws into the bone with a diameter smaller than 3mm. On the top of is a ball-shaped protrusion that helps support dentures. Typically, the denture has a rubber O-ring that slides over this ball-shaped part.

In some cases, a patient will go with the mini implant because they are unable to receive traditional full-size dental implants due to insufficient bone thickness. Some people are excellent candidates for the mini implant version simply because they are not able to undergo full-size dental implant surgery, due to health issues.

Our team can often place the toothpick-size mini dental implants in one dental visit. The placement usually requires no incisions or stitches. Recovery time, if required, is generally very short. Most patients are able to eat dinner that evening. How cool is that!

Don’t let the word “mini” fool you; your smile can receive a maximum upgrade with mini dental implants.

We offer a broad scope of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental services including sedation dentistry, general dentistry, porcelain veneers, and teeth whitening.

3-Tooth Solution For A 1-Tooth Problem?

Do you have a missing tooth?
Are you considering the types of tooth restorations available?
At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls and Brady TX, we take our commitment to creating exceptional smiles very seriously. We can help answer your questions about dental implants and bridges.

If you have a missing tooth and want to restore that gap in your mouth, you should know the differences between a dental bridge and a permanent tooth implant.

Dental bridges have replaced teeth for generations of people. However, they have some disadvantages:

  • They are a 3-tooth solution to a 1-tooth problem—the adjacent teeth must be prepped and crowned to hold the replacement (floating) tooth.
  • It is hard to properly clean the small areas under the bridge.
  • A dental bridge does not safeguard against bone recession at the extraction site.

Why does a tooth implant have key benefits over a dental bridge?

  • It is a 1-tooth solution to a 1-tooth problem.
  • It is usually stronger.
  • Will lessen the risk of bone recession (as compared to a bridge) because it replaces the tooth root.
  • It is usually easier to keep clean which results in a lower risk of decay.
  • They typically last longer.
  • Dental implants can support a denture or partial denture.

Our team is dedicated to restoring smiles for my patients with stunning permanent restorations. If you want to learn more about dental implants, call Ritchie Dental Group in Brady and Marble Falls today.

Restorative Dentistry in Burnet: Restore Or Replace

June 1, 2018

restoration dentistry in Burnet

As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat, although we don’t know why anyone would want to. Regardless, there is more than one way to fix a tooth. If you are the lucky owner of a set of perfectly healthy teeth, you may never need any of these procedures. However, if you are like most Burnet residents, you will probably need to restore a tooth eventually. With restorative dentistry in Burnet, you can have the smile you always dreamed of. Today’s post looks at six restoration procedures that are used routinely to repair damaged teeth.

A Porcelain Veneer
Porcelain Veneers are wafer-thin covers can hide a chip or crack or correct the alignment of a tooth that is slightly crooked.

A Filling, Inlay, or Onlay
This procedure has been used to restore teeth for over a century, although the materials and techniques have advanced considerably. One fairly new option is a white filling replacement for metal fillings. A traditional filling is shaped and molded after it is applied to the tooth. Because inlays and onlays are constructed in a dental lab, they are commonly called indirect fillings. Inlays are applied to just the center of the biting surface of a tooth (not to a cusp or point) and are generally smaller than onlays. An onlay restores one or more cusps of a tooth.

Dental Bonding
Bonding is used to fix chips, cracks, stains, and make teeth longer. It is also sometimes used to fill cavities. A skilled cosmetic dentist applies pliable composite resin and molds it to the precise shape required. The resin is then hardened with a special light.

A Dental Crown
A crown replaces the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring appearance, strength, and function. Crowns are used for teeth that have had a root canal, teeth with acute decay, the replacement tooth in a dental bridge, and the visible portion of a dental implant. Crowns can be made of metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all ceramic, or resin.

Dental Implants
Many dentists consider a dental implant to be the ultimate restoration because it restores the entire tooth – both root and crown. Most dental implant recipients report that the implant is indistinguishable from a natural tooth. With restorative dentistry in Burnet, an implant can prevent bone recession which is common at an extraction site. Dental implants are used in a variety of applications such as anchoring dentures and dental bridges.

There Is Hope: Denture Implants in Marble Falls

May 11, 2018

Filed under: Dental Implants,Dentures,Family dentistry,General Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:00 am

Burnet tooth implants

The condition of your teeth has a significant impact on your health and well-being. Denture wearers understand this all too well. When teeth can’t be saved, extraction can bring physical and psychological pain. In time, it can also result in bone recession.

The Drawbacks of Dentures

Traditional dentures are better than having no teeth at all, but they come with drawbacks. They can irritate gums and make breathing, eating, tasting food, talking, and even laughing a challenge. And dentures are not a once-and-your-done solution for missing teeth. As the jaw shrinks from bone recession, they require relines.

Stop The Progression

But there is reason for hope! Dental implant technology can improve the quality of life for men and women who have been wearing traditional dentures. To a certain extent, implants stop the downhill progression of declining oral health due to tooth loss.

Dental implants can be used to replace several teeth and/or anchor over dentures. Implant-supported dentures allow us to securely attach an appliance so that it won’t slip or irritate gums. Small titanium posts are inserted into the jawbone and fuse with the surrounding bone, creating a secure base for an over denture.

Restore Chewing Ability

Implant-supported dentures can halt bone recession and restore near-normal chewing ability. Improved chewing function with implants can result in better nutrition and overall health and vitality. The psychological benefits are equally valuable.

Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls practices restorative dentistry, which includes dental implants and implant-supported dentures. We practice general and family dentistry. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

Dentures in Marble Falls: Modern Tooth Replacement

April 13, 2018

Filed under: Dental Implants,General Dentistry,Restorative Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:00 am

Burnet tooth implant supported dentures

Not everything was better back in the “good old days.” Take dentures, for instance. They’ve been around for hundreds of years – George Washington wore them – and have improved the lives of thousands of people in Marble Falls.

But they are far from ideal. Among their drawbacks, they can impede such vital functions as chewing, tasting, swallowing, talking, and smiling.

In fact, some denture wearers have stopped attending social activities because they are worried about unstable and conspicuous dentures. Some have even stopped eating their favorite foods because their dentures cut down their capacity to taste and/or chew.

Welcome to the twenty-five denture!

Implant-supported dentures are far superior to conventional dentures for many patients. Traditional dentures rest on the wearer’s gums. Implant-anchored dentures, however, snap on to implants in the patient’s jaw.

To be a viable candidate for implant-anchored dentures, the patient must have enough bone in the jaw to support the implants. Implant-anchored dentures are most often used for the lower jaw, which tends to have greater bone mass than the upper.

Unfortunately, some patients who have been missing teeth for a long period of time have experienced bone recession. For patients who lack the necessary amount of bone, mini-implants may be an alternative.

The benefits of implant-supported dentures include:

  • Increased comfort
  • Natural appearance
  • Normal tooth function
  • Improved durability
  • Better bone retention
  • Denture relines not necessary
  • Minimal gum irritation
  • No denture adhesive necessary

Bone Recession Risk? Dental Implants in Marble Falls

April 6, 2018

dental bone grafting Marble Falls

We all know that a healthy smile requires strong teeth and healthy gums, but what about our jaw bones? They also need to be strong, but tooth loss can endanger them. Dental implants from the Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls provide a solution.

Bone is living tissue and needs stimulation to stay healthy. Biting, chewing, talking and all the other normal mouth functions keep the portion of the bone surrounding the tooth root healthy. When a tooth is extracted or knocked out, the bone that used to anchor the tooth root recedes as if it understands that it is no longer needed.

A dental implant resolves the problem by providing stimulation similar to the natural root. A titanium post is surgically implanted into the patient’s jaw. An artificial tooth goes on top of the implant. When it’s finished and healed, it looks and functions like a natural tooth, and gives the jaw bone the support it needs.

At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls, we provide restorative dentistry, including dental implants. We also provide cosmetic and pediatric dentistry. Call today to schedule an appointment.

A Fresh Start After Losing A Tooth

November 4, 2016

Filed under: Dental Implants — Ritchie Dental Group @ 10:09 pm

Marble Falls Permanent Tooth Replacement Are you one of the many Marble Falls men and women who has had a tooth extracted? If the tooth had been bothering you, it may have been a relief. Unless, of course, the tooth was in the front of your mouth and now the gaping hole shows every time you smile. Ignoring it is impossible because your tongue can’t leave it alone.

Once the tooth has been pulled, you have many important decisions to make. Is a dental bridge affordable? Do I want to damage two healthy teeth to anchor the bridge? Should I settle upon a partial denture? What about bone loss?

What if you could have a fresh start? What if you could have a permanent, natural looking tooth replacement that would restore your smile and retain the healthy bone and gum tissue around the tooth root? If you choose a dental implant, you can.

A dental implant is a permanent replacement for all parts of the tooth. It consists of three parts: the titanium post, the abutment, and the restoration.

The Titanium Post
—Inserted directly into the jaw bone
—Extremely strong
—Titanium is unique in that it bonds with living bone tissue (also used in knee and hip replacement surgery)

The Abutment
—Can be made of gold, porcelain or titanium
—Permanently attached to the post (it will not slip and slide like dentures)

The Restoration (Crown)
—Usually made of porcelain fused to a metal alloy (PFM)
—Is made to match the color of surrounding teeth
—Will look as good or better than the tooth it replaced

Dental implant surgery is not an experimental treatment. The cutting-edge materials and techniques have been tested and refined for several decades. In addition, it has been performed by Marble Falls dentists and prosthodontists for over twenty-five years. To schedule a dental implant consultation, call 830-637-7227.
