Why Your Child Needs Pediatric Dental Cleanings

June 19, 2020

Filed under: Dental health,Pediatric Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:00 am

In this post from Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls TX, we look at children’s dental cleanings.

Does your child need a professional dental cleaning if you practice dental hygiene at home?

Short answer? Yes.

Let’s discuss it.

Daily brushing along with cleanings and checkups are both essential. They reinforce each other. They work in tandem to protect your child’s smile as they grow.

We encourage patients to practice preventative dentistry by:

  • Brushing—help your child brush their teeth then clean thoroughly afterwards
  • Flossing—start as soon as your toddler has two adjacent teeth
  • Healthy diet–limit sugary snacks and beverages
  • Regular pediatric dental cleanings with a fluoride treatment
  • Regular examinations

Dental cleanings increase the effectiveness of daily oral care by removing the plaque and tarter that can accumulate even with proper dental hygiene.

At Ritchie Dental Group our services include pediatric dentistry. People from Burnet, Kingsland, and Meadowlakes trust us with their little ones’ dental health, and also trust our complete general and family dentistry. We also have an office in Brady TX. Schedule an appointment today!

Help For Kids With Bite Problems

February 7, 2020

Filed under: General Dentistry,Oral Health,Pediatric Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 2:53 pm

Overbites And Underbites

When the upper part of the jaw and the lower part of the jaw are not the same size, it often creates bite problems.

Overbites and Underbites

When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the reverse is true, it is called an underbite.

Crossbites

Another related condition is called a crossbite. Crossbites occur when lower teeth are in the wrong position. They may be incorrectly positioned sideways, forward or backward.

Malocclusion (literally ‘bad bite’) is the term used for all forms of bite problems including overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

Jaw Alignment Problems

Jaw alignment problems can cause a range of troubles for children. They can suppress proper chewing and swallowing. Teeth can shift around in the mouth, causing pain and affecting speech.

Gum disease and cavities are more difficult to prevent because oral hygiene is a challenge. TMJ disorder over time. Distorted facial shape and unattractive teeth are often the most noticeable and troubling issues for little ones affected.

Fortunately, there are a variety of effective treatments for bite problems. If you suspect your youngster has a bite misalignment, it is especially important to have them examined as early as possible. By starting early, you can make sure they avoid years of pain and self-consciousness.

Call Ritchie Dental Group at 830-637-7227. Dr. Greg Ritchie, DDS is experienced in diagnosing bite disorders in children.

We also perform cosmetic dentistry and dental implants for our Marble Falls area pediatric dental patients.

Family Dentist in Brady: Those Baby Teeth Are A Big Deal

August 24, 2018

Filed under: Family dentistry,General Dentistry,Oral Health,Pediatric Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:37 am

family dentist in brady

Today’s Brady dental blog focuses on the issue of caring for baby teeth. Why would you take care of something that’s just going to fall out and be given to the tooth fairy? It’s a good question and your family dentist in Brady has an even better answer.

Importance of Baby Teeth

Parents in the Brady area shouldn’t feel like they are wasting their time caring for their child’s teeth because baby teeth are more important than many people might think. Baby teeth are needed to keep the proper amount of space available for the permanent teeth that will come in later. Baby teeth are also invaluable in the development of clear speech. This is especially important for Brady parents who are dying to know what their child means when they point to something repeatedly and say ‘scklash’ or ‘grag-grag’. Having healthy baby teeth will also help your child develop a healthy diet because difficulty chewing can lead to the rejection of many different types of foods as children grow older.

And, finally, tooth decay and infection can be passed down from baby teeth to permanent teeth as they develop below them. That’s not what you want for the teeth that kids are going to have for the rest of their lives. If they’re teeth aren’t taken care of properly, then your child may need cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers and dental implants.

Healthy Teeth, Healthy Baby: Pediatric Dentistry in Marble Falls

Marble Falls dental exam during pregnancy

Women who are pregnant understand that carrying a precious baby can not only consume your time, but your attention. At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls we practice pediatric dentistry, and remind you not to forget your needs and your stamina during these vital months.

It’s vital to understand that all of the changes your body experiences during pregnancy also affect the mouth. Changes in your hormonal balance are required for growing a new life, but they can also compromise your oral health during pregnancy. Your gums are especially susceptible. In fact, the American Dental Association has conducted studies that show a slightly increased risk of low birth weight and pre-term infants in mothers with periodontal disease.

If you are already pregnant but haven’t seen us in a while, we encourage you to have an exam. We can check your teeth and gums and advise you if any changes to your dental hygiene routine are needed. If there are issues such as gingivitis, we’ll want to monitor them throughout your pregnancy.

Any treatment – meaning anything beyond an exam and cleaning – can, we hope, wait until after your child arrives. If you have a dental emergency that needs to be addressed before delivery, the best time is during the second trimester. Modern x-ray methods are extremely safe but should be avoided if possible throughout your pregnancy.

When you arrive for your exam, be sure to tell us that you are pregnant. If your doctor has given you special instructions concerning your condition, let us know. In addition, give us a list of all the medications and vitamins you are taking. Throughout your pregnancy, be sure to see us immediately if you experience any changes to your teeth or gums.

Remember, your diet significantly impacts your baby’s health and development, as well as the condition of your teeth. A diet low in vital nutrients can impede your baby’s tooth and bone development.

At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls, we provide quality dental care and pamper our patients who are expecting. Once your baby arrives, remember we practice pediatric dentistry and should see your bundle of joy by the first birthday or first tooth, whichever comes first. We also general and family dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry.

The Guide To Teeth Whitening in Marble Falls

April 20, 2018

teeth whitening Marble Falls

So you want to whiten your teeth? It’s an affordable way to upgrade your smile, look younger, and feel more confident when you interact with others. At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls, there are a few things we recommend when it comes to teeth whitening:

  1. Meet with us for a consultation first. There are several different teeth whitening systems and a consultation will help you establish which treatment plan is best for you.
  2. It is vital that you understand whitening won’t do anything to existing fillings, veneers, or crowns.
  3. During your consultation, decide how many shades lighter you want your teeth to be.
  4. With any teeth whitening system, tooth sensitivity may occur. In most cases, it won’t last for more than a day or so. Call Ritchie Dental Group if it lasts longer.

We offer Zoom! Whitening, which is considered one of the safest and most effective professional-grade whitening procedures available. It uses hydrogen peroxide gels activated by LED lamps to produce dazzling white smiles, in as little as one hour.

Ritchie Dental Group, with offices in Marble Falls and Brady, provides other cosmetic dentistry services, such as porcelain veneers. We also offer general and family dentistry, and love seeing the youngest of your brood for pediatric dentistry. Schedule an appointment today.

Bone Recession Risk? Dental Implants in Marble Falls

April 6, 2018

Filed under: Cosmetic Dentistry,Dental Implants,Pediatric Dentistry,Restorative Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:00 am

dental bone grafting Marble Falls

We all know that a healthy smile requires strong teeth and healthy gums, but what about our jaw bones? They also need to be strong, but tooth loss can endanger them. Dental implants from the Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls provide a solution.

Bone is living tissue and needs stimulation to stay healthy. Biting, chewing, talking and all the other normal mouth functions keep the portion of the bone surrounding the tooth root healthy. When a tooth is extracted or knocked out, the bone that used to anchor the tooth root recedes as if it understands that it is no longer needed.

A dental implant resolves the problem by providing stimulation similar to the natural root. A titanium post is surgically implanted into the patient’s jaw. An artificial tooth goes on top of the implant. When it’s finished and healed, it looks and functions like a natural tooth, and gives the jaw bone the support it needs.

At Ritchie Dental Group in Marble Falls, we provide restorative dentistry, including dental implants. We also provide cosmetic and pediatric dentistry. Call today to schedule an appointment.

Raise Your Dental IQ: Oral Health in Marble Falls

March 30, 2018

Filed under: Cosmetic Dentistry,General Dentistry,Oral Health,Pediatric Dentistry — Ritchie Dental Group @ 8:00 am

Raise Your Dental IQ

There are many simple things our Marble Falls patients can do to raise their Dental IQ and improve their oral health. One simple lesson involves bacteria – and trust us, everyone’s mouth has it.

But bacteria in and of itself isn’t the problem. Dental problems occur when the balance of bacteria becomes unhealthy. This is where brushing and flossing come into play. You should brush and floss your teeth twice each day.

Another precaution you can take to guard against the wrong kind of bacteria is to keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible, and close the lid of the toilet before you flush.

Make sure to wash your hands before you brush and floss. No exceptions!

When it comes to a good toothbrush, don’t get sentimental. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. If you can avoid the unhealthy balance of bacteria in your mouth, you can avoid gum disease, tooth decay, as well as bad breath.

If you can avoid decay, it’s less likely that you will need more extensive dental work such as dental implants and crowns.

At your Marble Falls and Brady Dentist, we are passionate about helping patients have healthy teeth and beautiful smiles. We provide general and family dentistry, including pediatric dentistry, as well as cosmetic dentistry.

If you would like to know more about a custom smile makeover, give us a call and a member of our friendly and knowledgeable staff will answer any questions you have and schedule a consultation at your convenience.
